As a long time SF convention organizer in the Detroit area, I found both your and Olivia's posts to be really fascinating. Thanks for the peek into what it's like to be brand new at one of these things.

Did you know there was an "Introduction to Penguicon" panel, designed for people attending their first con? Is that the sort of thing it would have occurred to you to attend? What couple of things would you most have appreciated learning at an event like that?

Re: social protocols. As I was saying to Matt in one of the replies on the comment thread of my post, it seemed to me that there *were* social protocols, but they just violated my expectations for intellectual conversations between strangers. Thus I felt sort of at risk, as one might feel were one suddenly thrown into foreign country whose customs one didn't know. I was unsure of the implications of my behavior in my interactions with seasoned con-people - nor did I know how to decode their behavior. In retrospect, maybe you're right: maybe there aren't any social protocols. It's hard to say as an outsider.
