Career Fair

Today there was a University of Michigan Engineering Career Fair on campus. The students turned out in well-dressed droves, and the man also made a very strong showing. From Microsoft to 3M, from Lockheed Martin to the CIA, it seemed as if all of the huge, high profile companies were there. But where were the smaller companies, the not for profit organizations, anyone at all except the money-making machines? They were not to be found. Granted, those types of organizations don’t need engineers en masse, but what if I don’t want to develop software for SUVs or PDAs? Aren’t there careers out there like that, too?

Showtime

Last night I went to a show in Detroit and saw Sahara Hotnights. It was a fun show, though the music is not the kind of thing I would queue up on my playlist too often. It really reminded me of some other band, though I can’t place it exactly. I don’t think I know any other Swedish girl bands… maybe it’s Franz Ferdinand.

While at the Stick, I saw that two of my newfound favorite bands, Rilo Kiley and The Mountain Goats, will both be there in the next two weeks! Anyone up for a show?

Das Experiment

While browsing my favorite movie review site, I came across a synopsis for a German film that I distinctly remember almost buying on DVD last Summer, but eventually passing up. I had no idea the movie was based on true events, but the synopsis makes reference to a surprising event that I’d never heard of, the Stanford Prison Experiment. Wikipedia has some info on it, though it seems to be largely taken from the official site. Interestingly enough, there are some surprising similarities between the experiment and the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. Fortunately, such experiments are a thing of the past. Right?

I recently took a test called the Political Compass that is supposed to report my political leanings. As it turns out, I’m in the company of Nelson Mandela and Mohandas Ghandi. Seems like good company to me.
